1.

1861. Texas secedes.

1865. Union General Wm. T. Sherman begins march to Carolinas.

2.

1863. Union General Grant makes attempt on Vicksburg via Yazoo River.

3.

1864. Sherman leads Union troops out of Vicksburg and heads for the important railroad center at Meridian, MS.

1865. Hampton Roads Conference takes place aboard the Union steamship River Queen. Confederates propose peace with Lincoln.

4.

1861. Seceded states meet in Montgomery, AL and form Confederacy.

5.

1865. Battle of Hatcher’s Run, VA begins.

6.

1862. General Grant captures Fort Henry near Nashville, TN.

7.

1862. Confederate reinforcements are rushed to Fort Donelson. Three Confederate steamers are abandoned and destroyed to prevent them from falling into Union hands.

1862. Union begins naval attack of Roanoke Island, NC.

8.

1862. Union troops under Burnside take Roanoke Island, NC.

9.

1861. Jefferson Davis elected President of Confederacy.

1864. Union prisoners escape Libby Prison in Richmond.

10.

1862. USS Delaware pursues retreating Confederate naval forces after Roanoke.

1864. Two Confederate blockade runners destroyed by USS Florida.

11.

1861. President-elect Lincoln departs Springfield, IL.

12.

1862. Grant’s troops encircle Fort Donelson.

13.

1862. Union gunboats commence firing on Fort Donelson.

1862. CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack) launched at Norfolk Naval Yards.

14.

1862. Union Ironclads arrive at Fort Donelson and fire on Confederate positions. Confederates return fire and end assault. 

1863. After causing extensive damage to Confederate positions along the Mississippi,

Confederates capture USS Queen of the West.

1864. Confederates evacuate Meridian, MS.

15.

1862. Nathan Bedford Forest escapes Fort Donelson with Confederate cavalry. Confederate Generals Pillow and Floyd also flee.

16.

1862. When asked by Confederate General Buckner for terms, Grant replies…"No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender."

1863. U.S. passes Conscription Act.

1865. Sherman captures Columbia, SC. Confederates evacuate Charleston.

17.

1862. Grant promoted to Major General.

1864. Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley sinks Union warship Housatonic off Charleston.

1865. Fort Sumter and Charleston, SC abandoned by Confederates.

1865. Columbia, SC surrenders to Sherman.

18.

1861. Jefferson Davis takes Oath of Office as President of the Confederate States of America at Montgomery, AL

19.

1865. Sherman and Union troops leave Columbia and head toward Fayetteville, NC.

20.

1862. Tennessee government moves from Nashville to Memphis.

1862. Lincoln’s 11 year old son Willie dies of fever. Mrs. Lincoln is devastated.

1864. Battle of Olustee, FL.

21.

1861. Stephen R. Mallory is appointed Secretary of Confederate States Navy.

22.

1861. A meeting in San Francisco declares California for the Union.

1863. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest wins victory at Okolona, MS

23.

1861. President-elect Lincoln arrives in Washington

24.

1863. Union troops advance on Vicksburg.

1864. Braxton Bragg appointed Confederate Chief of Staff.

25.

1862. Confederates abandon Nashville, TN

1863. Lincoln signs bill creating national banking system.

1865. General Joseph E. Johnston appointed Commander of Army of Tennessee.

26. 

1862. Paper currency is adopted in the U.S.

27. 

1864. Andersonville Prison releases prisoners.

28. 

1861. Territory of Colorado is formed as part of the Union.
